About

The SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR Test for Cats detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA, allowing the diagnosis of active infection.

Cats are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 through reverse zoonosis, meaning infected people can transmit the virus to their pets. Molecular detection by real-time RT-qPCR is the reference method for confirming infection during the early stages of disease.

Because viral RNA is generally detectable only during the first two weeks after infection, this test is recommended shortly after exposure to a COVID-19 positive person or animal.

Why test?

Testing your cat can help:

Detect active SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Confirm infection during the early stage of disease.
Support veterinary diagnosis in cats with compatible clinical signs.
Monitor cats living with COVID-19 positive owners.
Assist epidemiological surveillance and research.

FAQs

When should my cat be tested?

The ideal testing window is 5–14 days after exposure to a confirmed COVID-19 case.

What does this test detect?

It detects SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA, indicating an active infection.

Can healthy cats test positive?

Yes. Some infected cats remain asymptomatic while still carrying and shedding the virus.

How accurate is the RT-qPCR test?

The assay is highly specific and targets two independent SARS-CoV-2 genomic regions, minimizing the risk of false-positive results.

Should I choose RT-qPCR or antibody testing?

RT-qPCR is recommended for detecting current infection during the first two weeks after exposure. Antibody testing is recommended 2–3 weeks after exposure to determine previous infection.

More

Real-time RT-qPCR is considered the gold standard for detecting active SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The test targets two independent regions of the viral genome, providing high analytical specificity and sensitivity.

The highest viral loads are typically detected 5–7 days after infection, gradually declining after approximately two weeks. Consequently, RT-qPCR is recommended 5–14 days after exposure, while serological antibody testing is better suited for confirming previous infection after 2–3 weeks.

Scientific studies have shown that cats living with COVID-19 positive owners are at increased risk of infection, and cat-to-cat transmission may also occur.
