      AboutAbout

This ELISA test detects antibodies against Equine Influenza Virus Type A.

Equine Influenza is a disease listed in the WOAH (formerly OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code, and confirmed cases must be reported according to international regulations.

      What is Equine Influenza?

Equine Influenza (EI) is a highly contagious respiratory disease affecting horses, donkeys, mules and other equids.

The disease is caused by Influenza A viruses (H7N7 and H3N8) of the Orthomyxoviridae family.

It spreads rapidly in susceptible horse populations due to its short incubation period of 1 to 3 days. Crowding and transportation are important risk factors that facilitate transmission.

      Why test?Why test?

The ELISA test detects antibodies against Equine Influenza Virus Type A, supporting the diagnosis of previous exposure or vaccination response and assisting in disease surveillance programmes.

      Clinical signsClinical signs

      Clinical signs may include:

      • Fever
      • Harsh, dry cough
      • Nasal discharge
      • Depression
      • Loss of appetite
      • Muscle pain
      • Weakness

Although most horses recover within approximately two weeks, coughing may persist for longer and complete recovery of athletic performance may take several months.

Secondary bacterial infections are common and may prolong recovery.

      TransmissionTransmission

Equine Influenza is highly contagious and spreads through:

      • Respiratory droplets produced during coughing.
      • Direct contact with infected horses.
      • Horses may shed the virus before clinical signs become apparent.
      • Indirect transmission via contaminated clothing, equipment, brushes and other fomites.
      PreventionPrevention
      • Vaccination is recommended and widely practiced.
      • Although vaccination may not completely prevent infection, it helps reduce disease severity and shortens recovery time.
      • Isolate horses showing respiratory signs immediately.
      • Contact your veterinarian for diagnosis and sample collection.
      • Quarantine horses that have been in close contact with infected animals.
      • Thoroughly clean and disinfect equipment, stables and contaminated areas.
      • Assign dedicated equipment (such as water buckets and hoses) to infected horses.
      • Implement strict hygiene and biosecurity measures to reduce disease spread.
