      This DNA test detects the Pearl (Prl) allele, a recessive coat colour dilution variant originally identified in horses of Iberian origin.

      The Pearl gene modifies the base coat colour by producing golden dilution effects. When combined with the Cream (Cr) gene, it can produce horses with very light coat colours resembling double cream dilutes.

      •  N/N - Negative for Pearl

      The horse is genetically negative for the pearl allele, meaning it does not have any copies of this genetic variant. Its phenotype reflects the natural, unaltered base coat color. This horse will not pass the pearl dilution trait to its offspring, ensuring the continuation of the base coat color in the lineage.

      • N/PrlPositive Heterozygous 

      The horse is positive for the Pearl allele in a heterozygous state, indicating it carries one copy of the pearl variant. This configuration subtly dilutes the base coat color, infusing it with golden tones, although in some instances, the dilution effect may not be visually apparent.  As a heterozygous carrier, there's a 50% probability that it will transmit this dilution trait to its offspring, potentially leading to varied coat colors among the progeny.

      • Prl/Prl -  Positive Homozygous 

      The horse is positive for the pearl allele in a homozygous state, carrying two copies of this genetic variant. This genotype manifests in a more noticeable dilution of the coat color, even in the absence of other dilution genes. Being homozygous, the horse will invariably pass the pearl allele to all of its offspring, ensuring the trait's propagation and contributing to the diversity of coat colors in future generations.

      Pearl (Prl) is a recessive coat colour dilution gene that produces golden coat tones by modifying the horse's base pigmentation.

      A single copy of the Pearl allele generally produces little or no visible effect. Horses with two copies (Prl/Prl) display a more noticeable dilution, often accompanied by lighter skin and eye colour.

      When a horse carries one copy of both the Cream (Cr) and Pearl (Prl) genes, the combined effect produces a phenotype similar to that of double cream dilutes such as cremello or perlino, although subtle differences in coat and eye colour may be present.

      The Pearl allele has been identified primarily in Iberian breeds, including the Purebred Lusitano (PSL) and Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE), but has also been reported in other populations.

      Testing for the Pearl gene together with the Cream (Cr) DNA test provides the most accurate prediction of coat colour inheritance.
