The qPCR test detects the genome (DNA) of Equine Herpesvirus Type 3 (EHV-3), the pathogen responsible for Equine Coital Exanthema (ECE).

Molecular detection of EHV-3 by qPCR is the most sensitive, specific and accurate method for assessing the infectivity of an affected horse.

What is Equine Coital Exanthema?

Equine Coital Exanthema is a contagious genital infection caused by Equine Herpesvirus Type 3 (EHV-3).

The disease affects the vulva in mares and the penis and scrotum in stallions. It is transmitted primarily during breeding and is characterised by numerous small blisters or lesions, sometimes referred to as "the pox".

Why test?

The qPCR test provides rapid and accurate detection of Equine Herpesvirus Type 3 (EHV-3) and is the most sensitive method for confirming infection and assessing the infectivity of affected horses.

Clinical signs

The clinical presentation of Equine Coital Exanthema is characterised by superficial lesions affecting the external genitalia of mares and stallions.

Each skin lesion follows a well-defined and predictable course during healing.

Transmission

EHV-3 is transmitted through:

Direct skin contact during natural mating.
Contact with virus-containing secretions.
Contaminated hands, gloves, instruments, palpation sleeves or sponges.
Contact with the lips or nose of an infected horse.

The virus is easily transmitted by skin contact, even when the skin surface is intact.

Prevention

There is no commercial vaccine available against EHV-3.
Implement strict breeding shed biosecurity following the detection of a clinical case.
Stop breeding clinically affected animals.
Monitor horses closely for early recognition of new cases.
Maintain strict hygiene procedures to prevent mechanical transmission of the virus.
