About

This molecular test detects the NEV genome in blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and quantifies the viral load.

The test is intended for monitoring active viral replication and should be interpreted together with serological results when assessing the horse's NEV infection status.

Why test?

This molecular test helps to:

Detect active NEV infection.
Quantify the circulating viral load.
Monitor disease progression over time.
Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic management.
Assess the potential risk of viral transmission.

Results

The viral load test reports one of the following outcomes:

Undetectable Viral Load

No NEV genome was detected above the assay detection limit.

Detectable Viral Load

NEV genome detected, indicating active viral replication.

Important: This test does not determine the overall NEV infection status. An undetectable viral load does not exclude infection and should be interpreted together with serological findings.

FAQs

Which samples can be submitted?

The test can be performed using 5 mL of blood collected in a K3 EDTA tube or 5 mL of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected in a sterile tube.

What does the viral load test detect?

The test detects and quantifies the NEV genome present in the submitted sample.

Does an undetectable viral load mean the horse is free of infection?

No. An undetectable viral load indicates that the virus was not detected above the assay's detection limit but does not exclude infection.

When is viral load testing recommended?

It is recommended for monitoring active infection and assessing changes in viral replication over time.

How long does it take to receive the results?

Results are available within 5 to 10 working days after sample arrival at the laboratory.

More

This assay detects and quantifies the NEV genome using molecular methods.

Viral load testing is primarily used to monitor active infection and evaluate changes in viral replication over time. Results should always be interpreted alongside the horse's clinical history, veterinary examination and, when appropriate, serological testing.
