      AboutAbout

This RT-qPCR test detects the RNA of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV), providing rapid and highly sensitive detection of active infection. It is recommended for horses presenting neurological signs or when WEE infection is suspected.

      Why test?Why test?

      Testing is recommended to:

      • Detect active Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV) infection.
      • Support early diagnosis of horses with neurological disease.
      • Differentiate WEE from other mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses.
      • Assist disease surveillance and outbreak investigations.
      • Support timely veterinary intervention and biosecurity measures.
      Clinical signsClinical signs
      • WEE viruses affect the nervous system, so affected animals will have fever, depression and changes in behaviour.
      • Signs of infection may also include impaired vision, muscle twitches, circling or head pressing behaviours, the inability to swallow, paralysis and convulsions.
      • Survival rates of horses infected with WEE is 70-80%.
      TransmissionTransmission
      • The virus is transmitted to people and horses by bites from infected mosquitoes and birds during wet, summer months
      PreventionPrevention
      • Vaccines for WEE are available for horses.
      • Measures to control mosquito populations and minimize mosquito exposure will decrease chances of infection.

      What samples are required?

A 5 mL blood sample collected in a K3 EDTA tube and/or 5 mL cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected in a sterile tube.

What does the RT-qPCR test detect?

The test detects the RNA of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV), confirming active infection.

      Is there a vaccine available?

Yes. Vaccination is available for horses and is recommended in endemic regions as part of a comprehensive mosquito control programme.

How long does the test take?
