      • WEE viruses affect the nervous system, so affected animals will have fever, depression and changes in behaviour.
      • Signs of infection may also include impaired vision, muscle twitches, circling or head pressing behaviours, the inability to swallow, paralysis and convulsions.
      • Survival rates of horses infected with WEE is 70-80%.

      Horses showing neurological signs, fever, behavioural changes, or animals living in areas where Western Equine Encephalitis occurs.

      What samples are required?

      A 5 mL blood sample collected in a K3 EDTA tube and/or 5 mL cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected in a sterile tube.

      What does the RT-qPCR test detect?

      The test detects the RNA of Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV), confirming active infection.

      Is there a vaccine available?

      Yes. Vaccination is available for horses and is recommended in endemic regions as part of a comprehensive mosquito control programme.
