      About the testAbout the test

The SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test for Cats detects IgG antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 Nucleoprotein (NP) and Spike (S) protein, allowing confirmation of previous exposure to the virus.

Cats are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 through reverse zoonosis, meaning infected people can transmit the virus to their pets. Most infected cats remain asymptomatic or develop only mild clinical signs, although severe disease has occasionally been reported.

This serological test is recommended 2–3 weeks after exposure to a COVID-19 positive person, when IgG antibodies become detectable.

      Why test?Why test?

      Testing your cat can help:

      • Confirm previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2.
      • Detect IgG antibodies against both NP and Spike proteins.
      • Support veterinary diagnosis in compatible clinical cases.
      • Contribute to epidemiological surveillance.
      • Monitor pets living in households with confirmed COVID-19 cases.

      Additional informationAdditional information

Scientific studies have confirmed that cats living in households with COVID-19 positive owners are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Our research detected antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in 21.74% of cats tested in Portugal, demonstrating that reverse zoonotic transmission occurs naturally.

Because antibodies usually appear 2–3 weeks after infection, molecular RT-qPCR testing is recommended during the first 1–2 weeks after exposure, while antibody testing is recommended afterwards to assess previous infection.

If you test positive for COVID-19, limiting close contact with your cat and following appropriate hygiene measures may reduce the risk of transmission.

      FAQsFAQs

When should my cat be tested?

For antibody testing, the ideal time is 2–3 weeks after exposure to a COVID-19 positive person.

      What does this test detect?

It detects IgG antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 Nucleoprotein (NP) and Spike (S) proteins, indicating previous infection.

Can cats become infected with SARS-CoV-2?

Yes. Cats are susceptible to infection through contact with infected humans and may occasionally transmit the virus to other cats.

Should I choose PCR or antibody testing?

RT-qPCR is recommended during the first 1–2 weeks after exposure to detect active infection. Antibody testing is recommended 2–3 weeks after exposure to confirm previous infection.

      Are infected cats always sick?

No. Most infected cats are asymptomatic or develop mild signs, although severe disease has been reported in rare cases.
