      The RT-qPCRtest detects thegenome (RNA) of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus.

      Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), also referred to as triple E, is a viral illness transmitted to humans and horses by the bite of an infected mosquito. The insects pick up the virus from biting an infected bird. 

      Clinical signsClinical signs

      EEE virus affects the nervous system and infected animals may develop:

      • Fever
      • Depression
      • Behavioural changes
      • Impaired vision
      • Muscle twitches
      • Circling
      • Head pressing
      • Difficulty swallowing
      • Paralysis
      • Convulsions

      Horses infected with EEE often do not survive.

      TransmissionTransmission

      The virus is transmitted to horses and humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

      Mosquitoes acquire the virus from infected birds.

      Transmission occurs mainly during the wet summer months.

      PreventionPrevention
      • Vaccination against Eastern Equine Encephalitis is available for horses.
      • Control mosquito populations where possible.
      • Reduce exposure of horses to mosquitoes to decrease the risk of infection.
