The RT-qPCR test detects the genome (RNA) of Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV).

      What is Japanese Encephalitis Virus?

Japanese Encephalitis occurs throughout much of Asia, including India, China and Japan.

In temperate regions, infections usually occur during late summer and autumn, when mosquito activity is highest. The virus circulates naturally between water birds and mosquitoes before spreading to pigs and occasionally to humans and horses.

Although horses can develop severe disease, they are considered dead-end hosts because the amount of virus in their blood is insufficient to infect mosquitoes.

      Waarom testen?Waarom testen?

The RT-qPCR test is recommended for:

      • Detection of active Japanese Encephalitis Virus infection.
      • Horses showing neurological signs compatible with Japanese Encephalitis.
      • Investigation of suspected cases during outbreaks or in endemic areas.
      Klinische tekenenKlinische tekenen

      These include:

      • vary from a passing fever through to violent neurological signs and death
      • mild cases: off feed, sluggish and reddened or jaundiced (yellow) mucous membranes (gums)
      • more serious cases: lethargic with a fluctuating fever, difficulty swallowing, jaundice (yellow), pinpoint haemorrhages in mucous membranes (gums)
      • nervous signs such as lack of coordination, staggering, falling, aimless wandering and unpredictable behaviour may occur in serious cases
      • severe cases: blindness with profuse sweating and muscle trembling before collapsing and dying.
      TransmissieTransmissie

Japanese Encephalitis Virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The virus naturally circulates between water birds (particularly herons and egrets) and mosquitoes. Pigs also play an important role in the transmission cycle.

Humans and horses can develop severe disease but do not transmit the virus because they do not develop sufficient levels of virus in the bloodstream to infect mosquitoes.

The incubation period is 8–10 days.

      PreventiePreventie

      Sanitary prophylaxis

      • Housing animals in-doors in screened stabling can provide protection from mosquitoes o Especially during active JE outbreaks and during peak vector activity (usually dawn to dusk) o Insecticides, repellents and fans also provide protection.
      • Vector control reduces transmission.
      • Vaccine is available for horses .
      •  Vaccine protects horses from clinical disease and possible sequelae.

Horses are considered dead-end hosts, meaning they can become infected and develop disease but do not contribute to further transmission because viral levels in the blood are too low to infect mosquitoes.
