      About the testAbout the test

This profile includes 10 qPCR tests that detects 10 pathogens responsible for  neurological disease in horses such as: EHV-1, EPM, EEE, EEV, VEE, JEV, WEE, WNV, RBV, Hendra.

      Why test?Why test?

      This comprehensive profile helps to:

      • Investigate horses presenting neurological signs.
      • Identify infectious causes of encephalitis and myeloencephalitis.
      • Differentiate between viral and protozoal neurological diseases.
      • Support rapid diagnosis and treatment decisions.
      • Improve biosecurity and outbreak management.

      ResultsResults

The report indicates the presence or absence of each pathogen included in the panel: EHV-1, EPM, EEE, EEV, VEE, JEV, WEE, WNV, RBV, Hendra.

Positive results indicate detection of pathogen nucleic acid in the submitted sample and should be interpreted together with clinical findings and veterinary assessment.

      Additional informationAdditional information

Neurological disease in horses can be caused by several infectious agents with similar clinical presentations, including viruses and protozoa. Clinical signs may include fever, ataxia, weakness, muscle tremors, behavioural changes, cranial nerve deficits, recumbency and paralysis.

Because clinical signs often overlap, molecular diagnosis using qPCR provides a rapid and accurate method for identifying the causative pathogen during active infection.

The use of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) together with whole blood may improve diagnostic sensitivity in selected neurological cases.

      FAQsFAQs

      Which samples can be submitted?

The profile can be performed using 5 mL of blood collected in a K3 EDTA tube, 5 mL of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected in a sterile tube, or both, depending on the clinical presentation.

      Which pathogens are included?

The profile detects 10 neurological pathogens: EHV-1, Sarcocystis neurona (EPM), EEEV, EEV, VEEV, JEV, WEEV, WNV, Rabies Virus and Hendra Virus.

When should this profile be requested?

It is recommended for horses presenting neurological signs such as ataxia, weakness, paralysis, behavioural changes, muscle tremors or encephalitis.

      Why use qPCR?

Real-time qPCR detects the genetic material of the pathogen with high sensitivity and specificity, allowing rapid diagnosis during active infection.

How long does it take to receive the results?

Results are available within 2 to 5 working days after sample arrival at the laboratory.
