    Equine Herpesvirus Type 4 (EHV-4) is distributed worldwide and is an important cause of respiratory disease in horses.

    Clinical signs often overlap with those of other respiratory infections, making laboratory testing essential for an accurate diagnosis.

    The qPCR test provides rapid and accurate detection of Equine Herpesvirus Type 4 (EHV-4) and supports the diagnosis of respiratory disease associated with EHV-4 infection.

    Clinical signsClinical signs
    • Infection is primarily restricted to the respiratory tract and associated lymph nodes.
    • Respiratory disease is the main clinical presentation.
    • Abortion in pregnant mares is uncommon with EHV-4 strains.
    • Most infected horses establish latent infection, with viral shedding potentially reactivating during periods of stress.
    TransmissionTransmission

    Transmission occurs through:

    • Aerosolised respiratory secretions from coughing horses.
    • Direct horse-to-horse contact.
    • Indirect contact via contaminated equipment or objects (fomites).
    • Nasal secretions from clinically healthy carrier horses.

    The air and environment surrounding infected horses may also become contaminated with the virus.

    PreventionPrevention

    As latent carrier horses are common, eradication from a herd is extremely difficult.

    Preventive measures include:

    • Routine vaccination to increase herd immunity.
    • Good herd management practices.
    • Keeping horses in small, closed groups whenever possible.
    • Minimising stress to reduce viral reactivation.
    • During outbreaks:
      Isolate affected horses.
      Disinfect contaminated facilities and equipment.
      Implement strict biosecurity protocols.
