      About the testAbout the test

This respiratory pathogen profile screens for 5 major infectious agents associated with respiratory disease in horses:

      • Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1)
      • Equine Herpesvirus Type 4 (EHV-4)
      • Equine Influenza Virus
      • Rhodococcus equi
      • Streptococcus equi (Strangles)

Our laboratory is approved by the FEI for EHV-1 testing.

      Why test?Why test?

      This profile is recommended to:

      • Identify the most common pathogens causing equine respiratory disease.
      • Differentiate between viral and bacterial respiratory infections.
      • Support rapid diagnosis and treatment decisions.
      • Reduce disease transmission through early detection.
      • Assist in biosecurity management during outbreaks, transport and competitions.

      Clinical signsClinical signs

Respiratory disease may present with fever, nasal discharge, coughing, enlarged lymph nodes, poor performance and respiratory distress. Because these signs are shared by several pathogens, laboratory testing is essential for an accurate diagnosis.

      ResultsResults

Each pathogen included in the panel is reported individually as Detected or Not Detected. Results should be interpreted together with clinical signs and veterinary examination.

      Additional informationAdditional information

Respiratory diseases are among the most common infectious conditions affecting horses. Because many respiratory pathogens produce similar clinical signs, laboratory testing is essential to identify the causative agent and implement appropriate treatment and biosecurity measures.
